Detroit auto show: Cars of the future

Some wild - and some not so wild - ideas from the major auto manufacturers.

Nissan remains doggedly in the minivan market with the Quest even as other companies turn to three-row crossovers SUVs, the current family-hauler favorites.

The Forum could offer a hint at what the next Quest will look like. At the same time, it shows us what Nissan's designers think the ultimate, no-holds-barred minivan should do for you. Obviously, real-world affordability was not a consideration.

Among the Forum's unique features: Second row power-rotating bench seats that can be situated to face front, back, or sideways, a microwave oven between the front seats and an intercom system that operates over the van's built-in headphones.

The Forum's body is engineered to do away with the pillar between the front doors and the sliding side doors. This makes it easier to enter and exit the van and allows occupants to have a clear view out the side of the parked van.
