Dirt-cheap car tech for the masses

New technology option represents the next step in talking, texting and playing music in your car.

Text to your buddies
Getting and sending text messages on your phone is something you don't want to do while driving.
Text to your buddies
While it's certainly distracting to talk on a cell phone while driving - even with a hands-free headset - exchanging text messages while driving is really a no-no.

Still, there's always that temptation to take a peek when your phone buzzes with a new text message. Then, there's the temptation to respond - an even worse idea.

Ford's Sync can help scratch that itch a little more safely by reading the message aloud to you with a computerized voice. You can even reply by selecting from a menu of prewriitten responses.

Unfortunately only a few phones on the market can take advantage of this particular feature. It requires an advanced version of Bluetooth wireless networking technology, and most phones aren't this smart yet.

So for the time being, text messaging and driving still don't mix for most of us, but Sync also functions like a Bluetooth headset for talking on your cell phone, too, which is how you'd probably use it most of the time.
