The Sequoia's on-road manner lacks the sophistication of GM's big SUVs and, perhaps, even the Ford Expedition. In every other respect, however, it meets or exceeds Detroit's full-size offerings.

Toyota's reputation for reliability has taken a few lumps lately, mainly due to problems with the Tundra truck on which the Sequoia is based. Meanwhile GM and Ford are enjoying improved vehicle quality ratings from Consumer Reports and J.D. Power. Still, it isn't as though Toyota's gone entirely down the drain, and the Detroit companies are suddenly aces. The Sequoia remains a pretty safe bet.

In the end, for those who really need a big SUV, the Sequoia's more than worth a serious look.
