Telematics
Telematics
Availability: Offered on most GM vehicles. $18.95 a month after no-cost first year.

For now, General Motors' OnStar is to telematics what Kleenex is to facial tissues. Other companies have products that can do similar things, but ask a salesman to describe it and he'll probably say "It's like OnStar."

Press a blue button, and if you're a subscriber, a human operator will pick up, He or she can help you with any number of things, including finding an available hotel room, making a restaurant reservation or getting directions to a destination.

If you lock your keys in the car, they can even unlock it for you. And if you need to gas up, an OnStar operator can guide you to a nearby station with good prices.

If the worst happens, an OnStar operator is called automatically in the event of a crash to summon help right away.

OnStar's biggest downside is the monthly cost, but can be comforting to know that help is close at hand.
