When it launches in Europe next year, the Cruze will be available with either a 112-horsepower 1.6-liter or a 140-horsepower 1.8-liter gasoline engine. A 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine will also be available there.

One engine option that is expected for the U.S. market's 2010 launch is a 1.4-liter direct-injected turbocharged engine with a six-speed transmission, said AutoPacific's Kim.

That combination should attract customers looking for more than basic transportation, he said.

Exact pricing and fuel economy figures for the Cruze are not yet available.
