Interior gaps
First impressions mean a lot and, unfortunately, my first real impression of the MKS was from the inside, looking down. There's a curve at the bottom of center stack - the part of dashboard that houses the controls for the stereo and climate control - where the stack bends toward the center console, the part that runs between the seats.

That curve is made from a separate piece of plastic. I pushed on it because it looked like it should open. Maybe I could toss my phone or my sunglasses in there. There were big gaps above and below it, so it sure looked like a door. But those are were just big gaps and it was just a piece of plastic.

Then I grabbed the gear selector to pull it into drive. I felt plastic rubbing plastic as a pulled the button with my fingers and more soft sliding and grinding sensations as I drew the selector back. That's not a luxurious feeling.

To be fair, there's plenty to like inside the MKS. From the bar of wood trim running across the dashboard and on up, everything looks great. There's a handsome hand-stitched looking leather. The white-on-black instrument cluster is genuinely classy, easy to read and well-designed. But in a few critical places, the car let its guard down.
