2008 Buick Enclave
GM has been trying to turn around Buick's "old-man" image with products like the smart-looking Enclave crossover SUV. And it's worked for the Enclave anyway. The brand's other two remaining products, the LaCrosse and Lucerne sedans, haven't benefited much from the Enclave's glow, though.

GM has now announced that Buick is one of the carmakers' four "core" brands, along with Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet. That could mean that Buick gets more than just three products in the near future. It at least means that GM is serious about keeping Buick around.

Why keep it: First of all, as GM frequently points out, "mature adults" are loyal customers who make payments on time. You could do worse than to cater to this market.

And the LaCrosse's replacement, to be revealed soon, is expected to look much sharper than the current car, more in keeping with the new Enclave image. Last, but by far not least, there's China. Buick is beloved in China, a huge and growing market. Even if America's Buick just piggy-backs on China's products, that's more than good enough to keep this brand going.

Why dump it: It seems like they've decided not to. Dropping either Buick or Pontiac by itself just wouldn't have worked. Each needs the other to play off of.
