Trip fuel cost: $0
On Wednesday, GM's Wagoner drove from his hotel to Capitol Hill in a Chevrolet Volt testing vehicle. It didn't look like a Volt, though, because it's covered in the body of a Chevrolet Cruze, a small, new GM car that will be introduced here in 2010.

If you haven't heard of the Chevrolet Volt, you've clearly been avoiding all manner of media for the last two years. Even though the car isn't due to come out until 2010, the Volt has been seen in GM ads constantly since it was unveiled as a concept car at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show.

Called an "extended range electric vehicle," it will drive up to 40 miles on a full charge before a small gasoline engine - the same one used in the Cruze - will fire up to produce more electricity for longer range.

The Volt really has nothing to do with GM's financial viability. In fact, it probably won't make money until years after it's introduced. But it's a vital part of GM's pitch to Congress because it shows GM is doing important things with its money - besides paying off UAW retirees.
