A loss of $5.1 billion in 2007 might sound like the final blow to old-school mailing, though the postal service attributes much of its loss to a large earmark ($5.4 billion) to fund retiree health benefits.

But your mailbox isn't going to be obsolete anytime soon: The postal service handled a staggering 212 billion pieces of mail last year.
