In May, Francis Bacon's "Triptych, 1976" sold for $86.3 million at Sotheby's in New York, setting a new record for a contemporary work at auction. On July 1, "Study for Head of George Dyer," one of two Bacon paintings up for sale at Sotheby's in London, fetched $27.4 million - well above estimates of about $16 million.
