While sparse demand and shrinking prices bulldozed most homebuilders this year, the Bloomfield Hills, M.I.-escaped investors' wrath. Pulte Homes announced losses of $158.4 million this summer - no small cut, but a vast improvement over the same period last year, when it lost $507.6 million. While doubts remain about the company's position in a weakening housing market, Pulte has managed to slash costs and reduce its inventory.
