The unveiling of NikeiD, a Web site that lets shoppers design their own sneaker - including the selection of fabric, color and lettering - kicked off a nationwide customization fad: Competitors such as Vans and Adidas quickly followed suit with their own design-it-yourself services. Since then, Nike has launched in-store versions of the site, called Nike Studios.
