Motorola aims for diverse companies to account for 11% of its supplier spending in 2008, up 1% from its 2007 goal.

"Once you get to a certain point it does level off. It becomes harder to find these opportunities," says Nan Kelley, supplier diversity manager.

Motorola's diversification effort is a global initiative - leading to some surprises about how diversity is defined in different regions. For example, in China, businesses must serve minority populations - rather than being owned by representatives of those populations - to be deemed diverse.

To help Motorola understand such nuances, both domestically and abroad, the company works with organizations such as the National Minority Supplier Development Council and the Women's Business Enterprise National Council.
