Olympia, Wash.
County assessed value: $560,400
Mortgage balance: $386,000 (at the time of foreclosure, in 2006)
Singer-actress Courtney Love, widow of rocker Kurt Cobain, bought the historic bungalow south of Olympia, Washington in 1997, but stopped paying the bills back in 2003 and went into foreclosure in 2006. The multi-gabled, wood-shake shingled home was built for a local lumber baron in 1903 and comes with 13 acres of property.
When it went to auction in 2006, Love owed Los Angeles-based WMC Mortgage $386,000, which included court costs, sheriff's fees and interest, according to the Thurston County, Wash. Sheriff's office.
But when the house failed to sell, the deed reverted back to the mortgage company. Love managed to catch up on her loan payments before the house was sold and is still the owner of record, with no outstanding liens or foreclosure filings.
