Prescription: Boost funding, increase credit counseling

"The SBA needs funding and support, training and counseling. It needs to be prepared to help deal with credit issues by providing credit counseling, credit-repair education and financial literacy programs.

The SBA's three programs that have had been cut in the last eight years that I believe should be bolstered are the Microloan Program, PRIME and the Women's Business Centers. The FIELD Program fights for these three initiatives because they provide lending and other technical assistance to show owners how to improve a business."

*The FIELD Program provides research and training for practitioners and policy makers to identify best practices for micro enterprises with fewer than five employees.
