The data storage company's sales rose a respectable 12.4% to $14.9 billion, but profits took a 19.2% dive to $1.4 billion. Growth in EMC's traditional data storage products has slowed as companies cut their IT budgets.

But sales of its VMware virtualization software and services rose 42.1% as clients sought to maximize the efficiency of their data centers.
