Elko, Nevada: Good as gold

The small Nevada town has been able to dodge the recession. What's the secret of its success? Gold - and lots of it.

An open-pit gold mine operated by industry giant Newmont Mining. The other big miner that operates around Elko is Barrick Gold, a Canadian company. There are 18 open-pit mines and eight underground mines in the the area.
