Previous gig: Marcus, who was mentored by legendary value investor Michael Price, launched his career as the head of Mutual Series' European Fund (TEMIX) and co-manager of its flagship Mutual Shares Fund (TESIX).

Why he split: Price left in 1998 after selling Mutual Series to Franklin, and Marcus followed him out the door not long after that. He spent the next few years running hedge funds and assisting a wealthy European family in restructuring publicly traded companies.

Today: Marcus caught the mutual fund bug last year and started a new firm, Evermore Global Advisors, with old colleagues. "When we worked for Michael Price, it was one of the great places," he says. "We thought -- is it crazy to think that somebody could build that type of business?" The young firm recently debuted two mutual funds, European Value (EVEAX) and Global Value (EVGBX).
