How to fake 'green' an appliance
A recent government investigation exposed some pretty big holes in the Energy Star approval process.
How hard do you think it was to get an Energy Star label on your eco-friendly washing machine? Not hard at all, says the Government Accountability Office. The federal agency recently conducted a stealth investigation that found it was pretty easy to get certified.
The GAO created four fake companies and submitted 20 fake products to either the Department of Energy or the Environmental Protection Agency for approval. 15 of those bogus products got a green light. See if you can guess which ones received the Energy Star seal of approval.
