Newspapers weren't the only ones to suffer from the problems facing print media -- AbitibiBowater, a newsprint maker, was another casualty. As publications cut back on pages, AbitibiBowater's earnings fell.
Cost-cutting measures such as mass layoffs and plant closures weren't enough to salvage the company: it filed for Chapter 11 in April 2009, citing its multi-billion dollar debt load.
