Though 3D films are nothing new -- one of the first, House of Wax, was shown in 1953 -- they didn't get much traction because the movie, the technology, or usually both, failed to impress. But thanks to the sci-fi thriller, Avatar, Hollywood is now counting on Cameron's vision to remake the entire movie-going experience.

Rather than use existing technology, the director co-developed a new generation of high-definition stereoscopic cameras that cut the 450 pound weight of old 3D rigs to just 50 lbs and that more closely mimicked the way human eyes view the world.

Clearly, audiences were impressed: Avatar has grossed $2 billion-plus worldwide, and studios have been quick to capitalize on the craze, converting the Clash of the Titans remake to 3D and filming Resident Evil: Afterlife in his system from the get-go.
