Hilton Head, S.C.
Hilton Head, S.C.
High season: $1,935
Shoulder season: $1,246

WHY GO: Crowds on this lovely island 45 minutes northeast of Savannah disperse after Labor Day, leaving a 12-mile stretch of beach wide open for deals. Expedia.com estimates that the average hotel rate falls from $191 a night in July to $133 in September.

Hilton Head sees average temperatures of 76° in October, and the ocean is nearly as warm as the air. (By the way, a recent state report shows a less than 1% chance of BP oil reaching the shores here.)

Just book your tee time in advance: Fall is still fairly busy at the island's heralded golf courses.

WHERE TO STAY: The oceanfront Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. Rooms start at $149 a night -- up to 50% off high-season rates.

NEXT: Sydney, Australia
