Michigan was the the only state in the nation to lose residents during the past decade. Of course, with the decline of the auto industry, many have predicting the state's demise.

Michigan had only grown only about 12% over the past 40 years.

Michigan was once popular, however: It's original great growth spurt came in the decades from 1900 through 1930, when it doubled in population to more than 4.8 million.

The war and post-war years also brought an influx of migrants who were looking for high-paying factory jobs.
