The iPad packs its punch into a remarkably light package, clocking in at only 1.5 pounds and 1/2 -inch thick.

But tablet computers in general have been criticized as awkward to hold, and this one is no different. On Apple's Web site, most of the images of people using the iPad have them reclining with the device against their bent knees.

And while it's incredible how little the iPad weighs, it's not clear how well such a light device would survive a sharp bump or a fall.
