Since founding Google in 1998, Page, 37, and Brin, 36, have extended Google's dominance in online advertising by branching into new areas such as Google Maps, gmail, and Google Books. But at the end of the day, Brin and Page appear to be devoted to Google's core search business. Their Android mobile-phone operating system has helped popularize multimedia phones, for example, but the company doesn't actually charge a licensing fee for its use. Instead, Google's goal with Android (and gmail and other services) is to help drive consumers to its search engine, and in turn attract advertisers who want to reach those consumers. --J.P.M.
