You'll pay far less to rid yourself of these guests if you catch them early. Still, unless you've seen the bugs or their telltale blood streaks, you don't need a $200 to $300 inspection by a bug-sniffing dog. An exception is if you live in an apartment building where bugs have been found.

Regularly check your bed -- behind the headboard, inside the plastic corners of your box spring, and near the mattress seams or piping. "Most people are tipped off by the bites," says David Cook, president of the Tennessee Entomological Society.
