There are a slew of top luxury resorts in Arizona with rock-bottom rates during the summer, making this a worthwhile destination, particularly for avid golf fans. In the coming weeks, tee times at some of the country's best courses, including TPC and Grayhawk Golf Club, are widely available and cheaper than in the high season.
Room rates are also much less expensive. For example, a room at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is about $130 a night during July and August, significantly less than the nearly $400-a-night tab during the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
Downside: "It's going to be extremely hot," noted Brown. To beat the heat, she suggests forgoing a daytime excursion and taking in an Arizona Diamondbacks game in the evening instead.
