The rental company didn't have the moving truck I'd reserved, so I took a smaller truck and made it work. They billed me for the same price.

I called customer service and simply asked them to charge me for the smaller truck and take off $20 for the inconvenience. She said they couldn't do that, and I again asked in detail for what I wanted and said I thought that was fair. She replied, "Hold on, sir." When she came back, she said she talked to her manager and they would be happy to do that to keep my business.

When this happens to you, don't expect them to comp your whole car rental. That's unrealistic. Also, treat the rep like an important person. Use 'ma'am' or 'sir,' say 'no problem' when you're put on hold. Stand out by being a nice person.

What to do with $1,000 now

When stocks are scary and bank account yields paltry, parking your money under the mattress might seem like the only sensible move. Not the case.
