I always join the hotel chain's rewards program before going on a trip. I did it just recently for a stay at the Hyatt in Seattle and got bumped up to a large suite without asking.

A few years ago, I rejoined InterContinental Willard's Priority Club before a wedding in DC. I got upgraded to a diplomat's suite -- it was better than the wedding couple's!
