Negotiate from home
Negotiate from home
TrueCar.com* and Carwoo.com are two websites that allow you to easily negotiate with multiple dealers at once so that you can quickly get to the best price.

You can also call a dealership directly, but before you do, choose your specific car from the inventory on their website so you know exactly which car you want (and what options are included) before you start talking numbers.

Bottom line: Try not to get roped into negotiating face-to-face with a salesperson; when he's on his own territory, he'll inevitably have the upper hand.

*An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that negotiations with car dealers through TrueCar.com are anonymous.
