In the battleground state, many residents are still reeling from a prolonged period of record foreclosures and shrinking middle-class jobs.

GM's Moraine SUV assembly plant closed in December 2008, two days before Christmas. A University of Michigan study says the closing cost the region over 13,000 jobs at the plant and related industries, totaling over $700 million in lost wages.
