North Dakota
2011 growth rate: 7.6%
Economy size: $40 billion*

North Dakota has prospered thanks to the oil reserves in the Bakken formation. Mining helped boost the state's economy by 2.81 percentage points last year. Real estate, which is hard to come by thanks to a flood of oil workers to the area, and wholesale trade also contributed to growth.
