Illegal immigrants collect benefits
Illegal immigrants collect benefits
An illegal immigrant pleaded guilty to mail fraud earlier this year, after defrauding the state of Illinois of nearly $480,000 in unemployment benefits.

The crime? For three years, he assisted other illegal immigrants in applying for unemployment benefits, even though they didn't qualify for the funds.

He charged fees ranging from $200 to $1,000 for their applications. Once their claims were approved and unemployment checks were sent out to addresses he controlled, he would cash the checks and use much of the proceeds for himself.

He faces deportation after sentencing.
