Hotel bargains in big cities are harder to come by; vacation rentals offer more space at a lower price (you typically need to stay three or four nights).

The average hotel price for Boston last year was $165 a night, according to Hotels.com; recently you could rent an apartment for five for $89 per night in the touristy Little Italy area on the rental site Flipkey.com.

Other sites to try: Airbnb.com and HomeAway.com.
