Intel had its first $40-billion revenue year in 2010 -- and employees got their biggest bonuses in 10 years. Payouts totaled roughly six weeks' worth of pay on average. Workers also were able to cash in on the 217 million underwater stock options they turned in back in 2009. Back then the exchange price was $19.04. Intel shares have been trading above that price since.

The chipmaker hired 14,000 employees in 2011 and kept adding on perks. Intel's Santa Clara, Calif. campus has a new spa, and the company added two new near-site childcare centers in New Mexico and Texas.

Intel's people paid it forward by volunteering more than a million hours. Over the past decade, the company has invested more than $1 billion in improving education across more than 70 countries.
