Burns and McDonnell celebrated 25 years of 100% employee-ownership in 2011. From day one on the job, every new hire holds a stake in the engineering and environmental consulting firm. Every October the company holds a month-long celebration -- to remind everyone that all its profit (with the exception of some operating income) from the year is shared among its employee-owners. Team members who leave with at least six years of service are eligible to cash out 100% of their accounts.

There is no maximum on lifetime tuition reimbursement at Burns and Mac. The company also organizes subsidized outings and discounts to pro sporting events including both kinds of football -- MLS and NFL -- and Major League Baseball. Burns and Mac also pays for employee-owner participation in various sports leagues.
