The further house hunters look beyond the pricey District of Columbia and its inner suburbs, the more home prices drop.

This home is a good-sized Colonial on just under a quarter of an acre lot in Bowie, Md., an easy commute from both Baltimore and Washington -- when you're not stuck in Beltway traffic.

Agent Linda Violante said it's a low-maintenance home with an updated kitchen and recently-installed vinyl windows and siding.

Washington-area real estate has been running ahead of any housing market rebound. Prices have risen to a median of $285,000 in the first three months of 2012, according to the National Association of Home Builders, up almost 4% from the $269,000 trough set in early 2009.
