How much house does $163,000 buy?

Location: White Plains, NY
Price: $165,000
Bedrooms/baths: 3/1
Square feet: 1,000

It's difficult but not impossible to find a starter home in the New York-metro area at about the national median home price. You do have to look beyond sky-high Manhattan, however.

This one, in the Westchester County town of White Plains, has three bedrooms and is on a quarter-acre lot. The $165,000 price is only a fraction of the metro area median of $400,000, according to NAHB.

There's quite a bit packed into the 1,000-square-foot interior of this home, including a living room with bay windows and a wood stove, an eat-in kitchen and three small bedrooms.

It's located on a quiet, wooded street, less than a mile from the Interstate, which connects with all the major roads in the county. In addition, the Metro North train station is just a few minutes drive away. The trip to Midtown Manhattan takes about 40 minutes.
