The annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance collector car show in California attracts some of the world's most beautiful and valuable automobiles. With so many wealthy car collectors gathered in one place, a number of auctions take place around the main event.

These are the ten most valuable cars sold at this year's Pebble Beach auctions, topped by this car, the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster, which set a record for any Mercedes-Benz ever sold at auction.

Owned by a German baroness who fled her native country to escape the Nazis, the car ended up spending 4 decades largely forgotten in a Connecticut garage before being recovered and restored.
