Consumer Reports' top car picks - Americans shut out

Detroit automakers don't make it into the influential magazine's list.

Small SUV: Honda CR-V

consumer reports 2012 honda crv
  • Base price: $26,455
  • Test score (out of 100): 77
  • CR overall fuel economy: 23 mpg

Two of the toughest competitors in this category -- the Toyota Rav4 and Subaru Forester -- have just been redesigned and testing isn't complete on them yet. In the meantime, the Honda CR-V takes the top slot with a long list of strong points including its ride, braking, fuel economy and backseat roominess.

We'll have to see if it can hang on to this top spot next year.
