When this car was built in 1939, Germany was firmly in the grip of the Nazi Reich and the invasion of Poland was only weeks away. As conditions in Germany deteriorated during World War II, this car's original owner, a wealthy Berlin art dealer, put it into storage. It wasn't uncovered until 1949 in what was, by then, Communist-controlled East Berlin. It was driven for a while by Soviet diplomats before being sent to Moscow. It finally left the Soviet Union in 1967, and ultimately made its way to the United States.
