Manufacturing output has slowly been recovering, but the story of a manufacturing revival seems "overwhelmingly imaginary," said Alan Tonelson, research fellow with the U.S. Business and Industry Council.

Once adjusted for inflation, output is still not back to its pre-recession peak. Meanwhile, manufacturers have added only 568,000 jobs since 2010, about a quarter of those cut in the prior two years.
