Doctors often aren't protected by federal overtime laws because the law exempts certified professionals who are practicing law or medicine. But sometimes, medical practices fail to adequately pay their other workers who are entitled to overtime.
In 2009, Partners HealthCare Systems in Massachusetts owed $2.7 million to about 700 of its employees for unpaid overtime. The problem occurred as employees worked at more than one Partners-affiliated health care facility during a single workweek, but their hours were not being combined to determine the appropriate overtime pay.
