Military wives: My life with defense cuts

The Pentagon is shrinking the Army to its pre-World War II size. The brunt of overall Defense cuts is being felt by military families. Housing allowance and pay raise cuts only make it worse. 5 military wives share their stories, in their own words, edited for clarity.

Little things add up

  • Name: Jena Ziegfeld
  • Spouse's military service: Army National Guard, served in Iraq and Afghanistan
  • Number of kids: 1 and another due in July
  • Home: Harford County, Md.

We're on a budget. Of course, I think soldiers should make more money. We try to shop at the commissaries (military discounted grocery store) and get help from groups like Operation Homefront (a nonprofit that recently sponsored a baby shower for military wives in Baltimore).

Honestly, shopping at the commissary saves us a ton. I've compared prices. Overall, the commissary is cheaper for many things like boxed and canned goods, meat, milk and eggs. And obviously every little thing helps.
