It may be more yuppie than hippie now, but Berkeley is still proud of its progressive roots. Take a trip to Telegraph Avenue: Once the focal point of flower power, it's now a row of funky restaurants, boutiques and local crafts.
Then head to North Berkeley's world-famous Gourmet Ghetto for the farmers market, or if you don't feel like cooking, grab a table at one of its fine restaurants. Wrap it up with a cocktail at the tony Claremont Hotel Club and Spa. Located high atop the city, its Paragon bar has one of the best views of the East Bay.
These terrific small cities offer strong job opportunities, great schools, low crime, quality health care, and a true sense of community.
