Want to know whether the bus will be on time, or if it'll be too crowded to snag a seat?

With Moovit, users can get updates on their commute from people who really know: those already en route.

Applying crowdsourcing to public transit, Moovit uses real-time data to help people navigate everything from buses and trams to trains and ferries. Moovit users anonymously submit info (like their location and speed) to help others plan for their own commute.

App users can also comment on things like overcrowding -- about one-third of its 7.5 million users do so.

Founders Nir Erez and Roy Bick launched the app in 2011 in Israel. Today, it's available in 400 cities worldwide and adds one million users a month.

"We're harnessing the power of the crowd," said Amy Wyron, director of business development.

The startup has raised $31.5 million and is backed by Sequoia Capital, which contributed $28 million in funding in December 2013.
