The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD is the closest thing to an iPad out there, but it starts at $299 for 16GB ($379 for 32 GB). With dual bands and dual antennas for a better wireless networking experience and free storage in Amazon's cloud, the online retailer is gearing up to compete head to head against the pricier iPad. It's a little smaller than the iPad, but new anti-glare technology boasts greater readability.
In a preliminary review, Consumer Reports found reduced glare "creating a screen that's among the easiest to read in bright light among tablets we've tested," though it found the color fidelity to not be as good as the iPad.
