CES highlights & horrors

It's like magic!

Tactus Technology turns touchscreens into tactile keyboards -- and back again.

Tactus makes tablet and phone screens that contain a special liquid. When you pull up the "keyboard" on your device, the liquid pools to physically raise up a set of buttons. The process happens instantly, seemingly out of nowhere. When you're done with the keyboard, the raised buttons sink back into your screen, as if they were never there.

The firm-yet-squishy keys feel like teeny bath beads. The idea is that tactile feedback will make it simpler for people to use their devices for longer periods of time.

The look and feel is totally futuristic, but Tactus says its technology will appear in consumer devices later this year or in early 2014. -Julianne Pepitone
