Third generation iPod Shuffle

wtf tech ipod shuffle

The third-generation iPod Shuffle is one of the strangest products Apple devised during the Steve Jobs era.

The iPod Shuffle had always been a minimalistic MP3 player, with no screen. But the third generation Shuffle, released in 2009, took minimalism to an extreme. It relegated virtually all the iPod's controls to a single button located on the headphones.

These are the actual instructions from Apple's user manual:

  • Play or pause: Click the Center button.
  • Go to the next track: Double-click the Center button.
  • Fast-forward: Double-click and hold the Center button.
  • Go to the previous track: Triple-click the Center button within 6 seconds of the track starting.
  • Restart the current track: Triple-click the center button after 6 second of the track starting
  • Rewind: Triple-click and hold the Center button.
  • Hear song titles and artist names: Click and hold the Center button.
  • Listen to your playlist names: Click and hold the Center button, keep holding, and release when you hear a tone; then click to select the playlist you want.

Maybe Apple should have called it iPod Center button instead.
