The Can't-Miss Mirror
Volvo's latest safety technology eliminates the blind spot.

(Business 2.0) – Ford paid $6.5 billion to purchase Volvo five years ago because when it comes to cars, safety is sexy. The Swedish automaker built a solidly profitable business by focusing less on style and speed and more on protecting its passengers. This is, after all, the company that introduced seat belts to the world, and following that tradition, its engineers are always developing the next generation of safety innovations. Volvos coming off the line now feature a device that silences your cell phone's ringer while you turn so that you're not distracted, window glass that automatically sheds water for better visibility during downpours, and camera-equipped side-view mirrors (see photo, right) that reduce the danger of changing lanes. — JOHAN JORGENSEN
